Trashing Culture is now done and dusted
Another round of trashing culture done. Dusted. Put to bed. Finished. I’m feeling spaced and washed out as if I’ve been through a hot spin cycle and come out the other end; tired, worn, my colour bled, faded, jaded, dull, a shrunken version of my previous self. Organising 14 events over 3 days always does this to me; a dislocation from reality. From the long, slow build through quick bang wallop onto crash boom bang.
It was a great three days of gigs, DJ sets, films, spoken word, short stories, theatre, art and workshops with the entire production performed, engineered, photographed and designed by mutantspace members. I salute you all – you were fantastic. You gave your time, effort and energy into an idea, an idea that has now taken shape and been given the name of The Trash Culture Revue.
Was it perfect? No. Did it go swimmingly well? Not always. Were there hiccups and mistakes made? Yes most definitely, inevitably. Were details overlooked? Unfortunately. Did people enjoy it? Absolutely, they had a ball. And let us not forget the most important thing, members from our co – operative met each other, swapped news, information, crap jokes and pints. That is what makes our Trash Revue glow. Hands on people contact. It is always about people. It has to be. Why else would you do it? Not for money because there isn’t any, not for exposure because we’re too small for the media to care about and not for the sun because it rained all weekend. People, contact, relationships, art.
Everytime we put this show on there is much to be learnt and from this experience I will be sure to do the following the next time round:
Give more thought to venues
Create more interesting ways of presenting the revue
Sell the concept of the festival and mutantspace much harder
Feed and water myself regularly
Have hard copies of programme out and around the place
Have a longer lead in period
Build teams to look after certain areas of the festival
So thanks to Rob, Dan, Kieran, Michelle, Carolyn and Grace for helping out over the weekend – to all the poets, musicians, story tellers, writers, DJs, artists and film makers for making this another really special weekend. I’ll start thinking about the next Revue after I get a big feed of spuds into me
