Every weekend this year a new or established tattoo convention pops up around the world, from London to New York, Cobh to California! Thousands attend these shows to get inked, buy jewellery and clothes, listen to bands and have a few jars over the weekend. Body art is nothing new, having begun life as symbols of fertility, wards against evil and standards of hierarchy within tribes. In a way, not much has changed! Except we now have a strange thing called ‘fashion’ that tells us tattoos are cool in general, but that you don’t want a dreaded ‘tramp stamp’ any more. Hard to keep up? I’ll say!! But don’t worry, because we have an event lined up that will set the record straight and show off the talent of tattoo artists and any artists who are influenced by tattoo culture.
The tattoo art show will take place in Dublin this coming September and we are looking for YOU to get involved! If you are good with your hands (oo-er!) and can make MacGyver look like a hand-fisted pre-schooler then we definitely want to hear from you. If you’re an ideas person who can find a bargain in the third week of the January sales we want you now! If you’re simply interested in helping out another way and the idea of a tattoo art show makes you want to go to a pants party, we want you to get in touch too.
Wouldn’t it be cool if Dublin had a more interesting alternative art scene? I think it’s time we blew out a few cobwebs, frightened a few grannies (not really, we’d make them a cuppa afterwards), and rocked the boat with something new and still a bit edgy for this Dirty Ol’ Town. We’ve got plenty of planning time yet, but as the boy scouts say (or is that Simba’s naughty uncle?), “Be Prepared”! (hahahaaha!)
This is not going to be a convention, but focusing rather on the art of marking bodies, and other art forms that are inspired by that. I’ve been to some brilliant art shows based on this idea in the U.K. and know that Ireland would get a kick from a show like this too. I work for a tattoo website and write for tattoo magazines and having an art show based on tattoos has been on the cards for me for a while now.
for more on tattoos, body art and the show just email me
Even if you’re not around/only around in September, if you want to get involved there’s bound to be something you can offer!
