SWEATSHOPPE Go Video Painting Across Europe And It’s Mindblowing
SWEATSHOPPE have recently won a VIMEO award for their film ‘Video Painting Europe’ during which they did live interactive video wheatpastes in Berlin, Bristol, Belgrade, London and Paris. Over 14 days the duo pasted their videos in over 10 spots including the Berlin Wall, Les Invalides, Cordy House and even constructed a 5m telescopic electronic paint roller to create a two story tall video painting in Bristol.
So what the hell is video painting? Well its easier to explain visually than with words but I’ll give it a go anyway:
It’s a technology the pair developed to allow them to create the illusion that they are painting videos onto walls which they do with their DIY electronic paint rollers. The software was written by the two of them and what it does is track the position of the paint rollers and then projects video wherever they choose to paint. This allows them to explore the relationship between video, mark making and architecture as well as creating live video collages in real time.
It looks pretty cool and if you happened to be a bystander you’d be pretty gobsmacked when these two got out of the car in the middle of the night and start painting videos on a nearby wall…
