Kaethe Burt-O’Dea is an independent healthcare design consultant based in Dublin, Ireland. A diverse range of experience contributes to her research approach including careers in the arts, nursing, organic farming, product design, and cross-disciplinary sustainable design development. Her consultancy, desireland, focuses on the socio-cultural relationships that influence human well-being within the built environment and the promotion of integrated healthcare systems.

desireland works collaboratively with clients to develop project specific research methodologies that capture and incorporate user experience in the development of innovative health care strategies. Kaethe brings a fresh ‘outsider’’ approach to healthcare design research pitched to facilitate organizational learning and therapeutic model development as part of the design strategy

More recently desirelandʼs research focus has turned to the ʻstreetʼ and the influence of environment and behavior on health in the urban context. In 2007 she founded the Lifeline Project, a community led project which works in partnership with Dublin Institute of Technology. The project uses action research and community based learning to support the strategic development of green infrastructure in north-west central Dublin.

Mayfield Arts, Newbury House is a unique dedicated arts space based in the heart of Mayfield at Newbury House Family Centre. Mayfield Arts develops, manages and delivers arts programmes in consultation with the local community and according to funding received.
Currently our two main programmes are our arts based Global Education Programme and our Arts and Integration programme. Alongside these programmes we offer arts training, after-schools activities, an intercultural arts programme and support youth in initiating their own creative projects through the European Youth in Action programme. We also co-ordinate an Arts based European Voluntary Service programme providing unique learning opportunities with international partners

Started in UL on BSc Product Design and Technology, I got a Diploma back in 1994 and went off on a tangent or two in the interim. Now I’m back in this loop where my passion for ethical, socially inclusive, sustainable green design has a wider audience. At the very least those that cannot see it as a moral imperative can now see it makes economic sense. My skills on offer for the next two years (I joined third yr.) will initially be academic moving increasingly towards practical manifestation. Google ‘ezio manzini’ all interested in blue sky thinking.
