Seong Tae Jin’s Hand Carved Paintings Are Hyper Coloured Cartoons
Look closely at Seong Tae Jin’s paintings and you’ll quickly notice that each work is carved out of a single piece of wood – its textures and marks giving the cartoon’s extreme flatness an extra dimension. Many of the characters in his work are based on a popular 1970′s Korean TV cartoon character called ‘Taekwon V’ and tell the story of an unemployed man – from the Taekwon generation – who has lost his dreams of the hero in our current society.
A statement from the artist:
Do not ask about today, do not even try to know it Nobody knows life’s true meaning. Even happiness, sadness, and death.
Do not ask about my life. It’s a river never to return.
Do not ask of love and hatred, regrets and lingerings are already passed memories.
Let’s altogether unfold visions of happiness heading towards the future
Do not ask of sadness. Nobody knows like everything is smoke that can’t be caught
Do not ask about today, do not even try to know it
Nobody knows life’s true meaning. Even happiness, sadness, and death.
