Rik Garrett‘s photographs from his ‘Symbiosis’ series hit me in a real visceral way. On initial viewing the images are frightening, like your worst nightmare, an experiment gone wrong, a weird kind of take on the Alien films. However, when you give time to them you soon realise that his pictures are more about love and relationships. As he says himself:
Symbiosis is a new series exploring ideas regarding love, relationships, magic, alchemy and mutually beneficial partnerships in nature.
These subjects seem to follow him around as illustrated by two of the images above from his Subtle Bodies series in which he took a portrait on an instant camera and then, before processing, subjected the film to a homemade Kirlian device – an invention said to make the human aura visible – to give the viewer the opportunity to see or read the image as a fortune teller would read tea leaves or a psychoanalyst a Rorschach test.
As you’re probably starting to realise Garrett is into pretty esoteric subjects which include magic, alchemy, witchcraft, nature and parapsychology. All his prints are made using analogue equipment – film, darkroom, wet plate collodion, collage – which he often compiles into limited edition handmade books. Which I think is fantastic.
So what can you say except that his work is interesting, his subject matter fascinating and his technique superb. I suggest you check out his other work if you have the time or inclination.
