Politics and the culture of limitless choice

| Culture and politics | June 23, 2011

I found this fascinating RSA animate by Professor Renata Salecl who asks whether the ability to make limitless choices helps or hinders our lives and our society. It is a damning indictment on capitalism.

Her thesis makes alot of sense to me as it questions the fundamental truths we all ask ourselves everyday; the guilt and the anxiety we bear on a daily basis due to choices we make in our personal and professional lives. Her argument has an absolute bearing on how we perceive the culture in which we live and how we engage with it. Professor Salecl shows how our acceptance of this cultural/sociological philosophy of choice has only led to a negative outcome and a passive acceptance of the status quo. It is timely argument and one we must be part of.
