Rael Brian’s collages are explosive, a violent expression of someone who plays with the extremities of emotion, someone who finds themselves intensely involved in life. A lover of Jazz and Punk, surfing and skateboarding as well as the work of Basquiat and Bacon Brian brings all his confusion and frustrations into his portraits, one after the other, for years, aiming towards perfection, attempting to create an image of a person who expresses the human condition, the existential angst that he seems to grappling with as he tears at found images, magazines, newspapers.
These are not beautifully graphic compositions. They are not neat and tidy. Their aesthetic is not taught, cannot be learnt from a book. Rather it is a rage, a pure expression of life, of existence, of a need, of a young Brazilian artist who must, everyday, work towards a truth.
