Pink Floyd Live in Pompeii Rock Among the Ruins
Pink Floyd. Prog rock. Yes? So what. Who cares. Pink Floyd have been a soundtrack to so many parts of my life, good, bad and mad. I loved having them around, still do occasionally, and this film of them in Pompeii in 1971 is pretty fantastic.
In October 1971 the band set up their gear in the middle of the Ampitheatre of Pompeii and blasted out three songs into an empty space; ‘Echoes’, ‘A Saucerful of Secrets’ and ‘One of These Days’. The idea was to capture every layer of their sound for theatrical reproduction.
Above is the 2003 directors cut of the final film ‘Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii. It includes not just the band’s Pompeii performance but additional songs shot in Paris, recording and interviewing sessions at Abbey Road and a number of clips of exploding volcanoes and Earth from space.
Cool or what?
