Paula Braconnot’s collages are a metamorphosis, a mutation of the archaic natural world into the mechanistic future.
Using alchemical engravings, anatomical diagrams and 19th century drawings of flora and fauna, Braconnet transmutes each image into a new organism in which dream forms come alive in an industrial world, her hybrid beings and organs cultivated and growing in a land that is as infinite as our imagination.
These collages explore themes such as time, death and myth, they tread a line back to the past in order to help us see the present in a new way. Like her fellow artists, Dan Hillier and Ruth Marten, Braconnet sees the past as an integral part of our understanding of the present. For without history and the knowledge of our forebears we would be doomed before we were born.
