Marcus Oakley’s illustrations have a real outsider art quality about them. There’s an innocence, an insolence in a way, they have no regard for fashion, trends. Definitely not. No. They do their own thing, they’re more concerned with a mood, trapping a time, a sketch of a memory passing. So in that sense you could say his work is both retrospective and contemporary.

He wears his influences on his sleeve; the countryside in Norfolk, 60′s music in general and The Beach Boys in particular and his childhood memories. It’s all there in his delightful and colourful pictures of people doing everyday things in everyday places. I love them. They have heart.
