Hollie Chastain’s Collages Have An Innocent Beauty
Hollie Chastain‘s collages are beautiful and old world like. She uses vintage books, found images, text, watercolour and ink to give her work greater depth, a vitality that’s very alluring, charming even. The pictures emanate joy and happiness and all that’s good, influenced as they are by nature and fairy tales, while the subjects of her compositions are brought to life by the materials as opposed to a pre-defined idea.
Chastain has an affiliation with outsider artists such as Henry Darger and James Harold Jennings as well as the paintings of Souther Salazar all of whom have very different styles and techniques yet retain a certain innocence, a guilelessness, which is a fair description of her own work.
