Hayley Lock‘s collages are dark and compelling. I’m strangely attracted to them. Find it hard to take my eyes off them. Her use of historical characters and reappropriated images create a new and imagined historical and mythical space in which she weaves a complex narrative where sexual turmoil and mysterious tales of heartache and lust consume her noblemen and women.
There are many strands, stories, going on within each image and for Lock this invention of muiltiple histories is what her work is all about. Here is what she has to say about her work:
Using illusionary reference to a quiet, perhaps even hidden language of esoteric symbol, the nature of my selected materials appear deliberately opaque. Moving through a fragmentary universe that includes an unknown and seemingly anonymous mythology, I perform acts of encounter, translation and deliberate disorientation through storytelling.
