Gium Tio Zarraluki‘s strange, compelling portraits belong in a scary kids book. They’re cartoonish, disturbing and I’d love to se them in some sort of context – they look as if they’ve escaped from the set of animated horror film. His process is interesting – he often begins with a glossy image from a magazine and slowly paints layer upon layer to create the finished work. He doesn’t have much to say on his website other than he’s based in Barcelona but I’d like to know more. Then again he’s another young painter so perhaps in time there will be more of him out there in the ether.
