Gerco de Ruijter‘s 2008 – 2011 landscape photo series of Iceland, The Netherlands and Dubai is incredible. When I first saw his photos I thought I was actually looking at abstract paintings but then again that’s what he wants you to think, wants you to see, wants you to ponder as you gaze into his images.

To create this illusion of abstraction Ruijter uses a remote controlled kite to take his birds eye perspective aerial photos – it is a unique approach which comes out of his formal training as a painter, a time when he used photography as a tool to make studies for his canvases.
