Gavin Lavelle’s Collages Are Inspired By The Irish Cultural Landscape
Gavin Lavelle is an Irish artist currently based in Clifden, County Mayo, whose distinctive collage technique is full of images that find their inspiration in the the west of Ireland, Irish history and our Christian tradition. His work made using ink, watercolour and acrylic which he juxtaposes with found images and scraps of maps, bird books, biology and botanical source books and historical narratives as well as Katazome and Chiyogami hand-printed paper.
His collages are remarklably lush, his colours almost Fauvist but throughout you can see the West of Ireland peeking through, the blue sky, the cold water, the rugged landscape of Connemara. It’s a real joy to study his work, full as they are of strange beasts, dinosaurs, flying fish, strange flora and fauna, images from history, myth and the imagination. His pictures are poetic, a paen to a rich culture, a metling pot of ideas.
