Dwane’s Paintings From His ‘Writing My Name Until It Matters’ Explore The Role Of Tagging In Contemporary Art
Dwane‘s paintings come from the street, from his work as a graffiti artist in Sweden for over 30 years. In his first solo show in Berlin, ‘Writing My Name Until It Matters’ Dwane will be showing his latest tag paintings in which he’s written his tag name hundreds, thousands of times, onto canvas until it’s been totally eradicated, destroyed over time, paint and process.
Here’s what he has to say about the work:
This process eradicates the very essence of tagging, leaving no name to read and no typographic code to decipher. A process of “anti graffiti” painting utilising the most essential means of creating your graffiti identity and visual statement while destroying it at the same time.
This is the first time I’ve seen Dwane’s work so thought I’d show you some of his more graphic work which are a testament to his anti – war stance and give you a greater sense of his work as a painter and street artist.
If you happen to be in Berlin between 14th November – 8th December you can see his work at the Skalitzers Contemporary Art Gallery, Revaler Strasse 99, Tor 4, Friedrichshain, Berlin, Germany.
