Two Nice Swedish Girls

| Life in a cultural petri dish | July 2, 2009

In recent years, I have begun to realise it is often what something is not about which is the key to understanding it. Two Nice Swedish Girls is the name of a radio show on Cork Campus Radio 98.3fm; it is a music show entirely devoid of anything to do with nice Swedish girls. The less you think about things, the more sense they make.

Seeing as the title is a complete misnomer, I felt it appropriate to offer some sort of primer as to what you may hear and the reasoning behind it. Music taste is a prickly subject but if one can happily announce that ‘I’m hardly ever wrong’ well then, take it from me, it makes things a whole lot easier. Admittedly, I do have an unfortunate propensity for recalling the exact date and place of each album that I have bought – even if I bought them years before my actual birth – but will try and refrain from such pronouncements on the show.

Whenever I listen to music, I always imagine myself being one of the performers in the band. Or, on occasion, more than one of them. For example, when as a teenager I listened to The Smiths incessantly, I imagined myself not only as Morrissey, but also as guitar hero Johnny Marr, thus earning insane amounts of adulation from the press and public. Similarly when listening to traditional music, I imagine myself furiously swapping instruments with the band members ensuring that my dazzling mastery of the uileann pipes is followed by some intricate bouzouki fretwork, all to be topped off by a mournful lament to close the performance. Such is the mindset of the non-musician, he who lives his life vicariously through the talent of others.

So, the show. Two Nice Swedish Girls will be broadcast through the prism of hazy evenings spent drinking Buckfast in front of bonfires, subsequent morning spent grappling with fear, loathing and paranoia and entire days busily doing nothing for free. Each show will have an episode title, relfective of current events at that time, be it the limp, consumer uncertanties of our age, the fragile heartbreak tenancies of our city or maybe just our own hearts ruled out of bounds by the ruthless onslaught of modern life today.

Two Nice Swedish Girls will be on Cork Campus Radio 98.3fm every Tuesday from 3 – 4pm.
