The essay talks about autonomy and how one of the great challenges in the modern world is how we can be truly autonomous when we are constantly made dependent on the state and the market for our livelihoods. This is the battle, this is the fight and we must always, continually, ask ourselves; how we can push against the tide, create new networks, new systems, new economies, new cultures, all of which are ours, belong to the people and which enable us to live as we desire

John Holloway is a lawyer, Marxist-oriented sociologist and philosopher, whose work is closely associated with the Zapatista movement in Mexico, his home since 1991. It has also been taken up by some intellectuals associated with the piqueteros in Argentina; Abahlali baseMjondolo movement in South Africa and the Anti-Globalization Movement in Europe and North America. He is currently a teacher at the Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences at the Autonomous University of Puebla.
