Aartjan Venema’s Illustrations Are Wonderful Warped Comic Visions
I’d describe Aartjan Venema’s illustrations as a fusion of war comic sensibilities, fine art and digital design – he moves easily between different mediums but somehow retains an old school illustrative aesthetic. Having said all that his subject matter is off the wall. Most of the images here are from a series he did based on a book in which the allies are trying to locate count dracula during WWII – a warped version of those old WWII comic books that I, and many kids like me, read when they were young – but come up against nazi dinosaurs.
His work is most definitely narrative driven and much of it has a fantastic blend of text and image which gives it that comic book style that I love so much. He’s obviously into alot of odd stuff – esoteric subject matter that feeds these wonderful pictures.
