Aakash Nihalani’s Tape Art Makes For Wonderful Optical Illusions
Aakash Nihalani uses coloured tape to create wonderful optical illusions in and about New York where he’s based. His work is a great example of how good use of the simplest of materials can create a piece of work that brings joy to many people. I’m sure it’s not as easy as it looks as Nihalani’s ability to draw isometric rectangles and squares needs to be spot on, perfect as do the photograph he takes of the interactions between people and his geometric shapes.
Here’s what he says about his work:
For however briefly, I am trying to offer people a chance to step into a different New York than they are used to seeing, and in turn, momentarily escape from routine schedules and lives. We all need the opportunity to see the city more playfully, as a world dominated by the interplay of very basic color and shape. I try to create a new space within the existing space of our everyday world for people to enter freely, and unexpectedly ‘disconnect’ from their reality.
