‘The Girl With Seven Horses’ by artist Ulrika Kestere is a darkly sweet photography series. It’s based on a fairy tale about a woman whose drying laundry is taken by a storm and as she walks through the countryside she discovers her clothing has taken the form of horses in various shapes.

Michel Foucault And His Debate With Noam Chomsky

| Culture and politics | January 24, 2012

Michael Foucault

For anyone that doesn’t know Michel Foucault was one of the most influential philosophers of the 20th Century. His most famous book was, ‘Discipline and Punish: The Birth Of The Prison’, which traced the transition from the use of public torture and execution in the 18th Century to the prevalence of much more subtle uses of power with a focus on incarceration, rehabilitation, prevention and surveillance.

Amazing Origami Masks And Tessellations

Masks and Tessellations by Joel Cooper

Origami Masks

Aren’t these incredible? All the masks are made from single sheets of paper by artist Joel Cooper. You’d want to have OCD or a mathematical mind gone crazy to be able to sit down and work out how to make them work – I’d never be able to.

By the way if you don’t know what a tessellation is here is a good description of one:

Tessellation is the process of creating a two-dimensional plane using the repetition of a geometric shape with no overlaps and no gaps. Generalizations to higher dimensions are also possible. Tessellations frequently appeared in the art of M. C. Escher, who was inspired by studying the Moorish use of symmetry in the Alhambra tiles during a visit in 1922. The word corresponds with the everyday term tiling which refers to applications of tessellations, often made of glazed clay. Examples of tessellations in the real world include honeycombs and pavement tilings

Peoples DIY Skills Exchange Festival Meeting In Cork, Tuesday 24th January, Cork

| Culture and politics | January 23, 2012

diy arts festival cork

Tomorrow evening – Tuesday 24th January 2012 – our arts skills exchange and Cork Community Art Link will be hosting a meeting for everyone in Cork who is interested in creating a festival that is run by the people and for the people of Cork. We’re hoping that we, together, will make our mark on this city, our city. A city that belongs to all of us.

The idea is simple;
We are proposing to host a festival – with all you that are interested in getting involved, participating and helping – between Wednesday 16th and Sunday 20th May, 2012.
We will all work together, share resources, skills, time and energy to develop, create and produce all manner of events, talks, tea parties, gigs, workshops, films, plays, musicals, talent shows, street theatre, kids events, parties, puppet shows, art exhibitions, craft exhibitions, story telling, sport events, neighbourhood picnics, projections, historical walking tours, etc in the city and in the different communities around the city.

We hope to involve community groups, organisations and associations, development projects, artist co-operatives, studios, dance and theatre companies, businesses, venues and musicians in making this happen.
The festival will not be tied to any one place nor shall it be tied to any one genre, style, type, form or content.
This is a DIY festival. This is your festival. This is a people’s festival, by us and for us. It is about our talents and passions, about solidarity and pride, imagination and participation. It is about taking decisions by ourselves and for ourselves. It is about citizenship.

Artist John Dilnot

The artist John Dilnot has created these wonderful bird boxes which seem to me to be a cross between art and crafts. He  generally uses clipped illustrations of birds and then arranges them into  beautiful dioramas within wooden boxes. As you can see from the images he often lines the interiors with antique maps and then sets the birds into small flocks so they look like they’re on perpetual journeys across the globe.

Beautiful Time Lapse Video Of Yosemite National Park

| Film and animation | January 23, 2012

I’ve always wanted to go to Yosemite National Park and still hope to someday – after this recession perhaps. Anyway I found this time lapse video that really shows off the beauty of the place. The video was produced by two film makers who found each other through Vimeo (my favourite online video site).

Both shared an interest in time – lapse photography and the beauty of Yosemite which resulted in this beautiful video that we all now have the pleasure of watching.

Christopher Walken Reads The Three Little Pigs, The Raven, And A Little Lady Gaga

| Life in a cultural petri dish | January 21, 2012

Here are a number of videos featuring the great actor Christopher Walken reading two chidrens stories and a poem. Above is a famous reading he did in 1993 on a show hosted by Jonathan Ross. The story he’s reading and improvising on is The Story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’.

The second reading is completely different. It’s Edgar Allan Poe’s famous poem, ‘The Raven’ and Walken stays true to the original text which was published in 1845.

| Film and animation | January 20, 2012

This rare interview with the great German Director Fritz Lang was conducted by William Friedkin, director of The French Connection and The Exorcist in 1975 a year before Lang died. In it Lang speaks about his early life as a runaway, his start in theatre and film and of course his masterpieces; Metropolis and M. He also recalls a frightening encounter, that took place in 1933, when he met Nazi Minister of Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels. A moment that provoked him to flee Germany the very same day.

Steamboat Willie: Disney Introduces Mickey Mouse And Sound In 1928

| Film and animation | January 20, 2012

The Jazz Singer starring Al Jolson, was the first great ‘talkie’ in cinema when it wowed American audiences in 1927. Knowing that cinema had irrevocably changed forever Walt Disney produced his first sound cartoon, Steamboat Willie in 1928 for the grand total of $4,986. He was later to say:

The effect on our little audience was nothing less than electric. They responded almost instinctively to this union of sound and motion. I thought they were kidding me. So they put me in the audience and ran the action again. It was terrible, but it was wonderful! And it was something new!

The technical innovations needed to create the cartoon made a legend of it however today it is known for something else, namely the debut of Mickey Mouse and his girlfriend Minnie, two of the most recognized characters in cartoon history. The celebrated Disney animator that forst brought Mickey to life was a man called Ub Iwerks and we have been living with his legacy ever since.

Fallingwater; An Animated Film Of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Finest Creation

| Film and animation | January 19, 2012

This is all about the masterpiece of architecture that is Fallingwater. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1935 construction began in 1936 and was completed in 1939. I know very little about architecture but this house goes beyond the architect fraternity, it has become a cultural icon, a magnificent creation that uses and respects nature and in so doing creates a wondrous beauty in itself.
